HbA1c is also called Hemoglobin A1c. The main function of the hemoglobin protein is to transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues and then to transfer carbon dioxide from tissues to the lungs. It is found in the red blood cells. It is hemoglobin that gives the blood its red color.

The HbA1c test measures the amount of sugar or glucose attached to your hemoglobin. This test is done to check if you have diabetes.

You need an HbA1c test if you're showing symptoms of diabetes. These symptoms may include

  • Unexplained increase in thirst – you constantly feel like drinking water.
  • You urinate quite often.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Fatigue without reason.

The presence of one of these symptoms doesn't always mean that you have diabetes – if you end up drinking lots of water or consuming lots of liquid then for a few hours you may experience increased urination – but if these symptoms persist you must consult a doctor and he or she may advise you to have an HbA1c test done as early as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know that I need to get an HbA1c test done?

Above on this page we have listed symptoms that can help you decide if you want to get an HbA1c test done. You should also consider your family history. Diabetes is hereditary. Although it isn't necessary that the ailment is inherited by every child, due precaution must be taken.

Should I get my HbA1c test done regularly?

If there is a chance that you're prediabetic or diabetic, then yes, every 3-6 months. Even if for a few months your diabetes have been normal (you can check your blood sugar levels every day at home), you should get the test done at regular intervals to monitor your condition.

Do I need to fast before I submit my blood sample for the HbA1c test?

There is no need to fast. The HbA1c test observes the long-term trend, like an average. Unlike the regular blood sugar test, an HbA1c test isn't immediately affected by what you have eaten before the blood is drawn.

Is some special preparation needed for HbA1c test?

No special preparation is needed. As mentioned above, there is no need to fast. You can submit your blood sample at any time of the day. Since this is the average data of around three months, it is not affected by your immediate routine.

What is the difference between HbA1c and blood glucose levels?

HbA1c is a long-term trend. It is mostly an average of 3-4 months. It finds how high or low your blood sugar levels have been over a period of time. The blood glucose level on the other hand is at a single point in time. For example, what is your blood glucose level right now? This is something that you can find out even at home.

Is there a way I can bring down my HbA1c levels without medication?

Unless the situation is extreme and requires medical intervention, you can monitor what you eat and consume to lower the levels of HbA1c. Try to lose extra weight. Remain physically active. Reduce your alcohol limit intake. If you can, quit smoking. Minimize intake of sugar content.
