The levels of C-reactive protein in your blood indicate inflammation in the body and is considered to be one of the most sensitive acute phase reactants, which means, it is an inflammation marker that indicates a significant change in the blood concentration during an inflammation. The C-reactive protein is a "response" protein that your body sends if there is inflammation in your body.

HS-CRP test is a blood test that finds out whether the levels of C-reactive protein are high in your blood. A higher level of CRP in the blood is a marker of inflammation. This can lead to a stroke or other heart diseases. One needs to keep in mind that an HS-CRP test is not a test for heart disease, it is a test for inflammation in your body. Hence, there might be different symptoms for different people that warrant an HS-CRP test, and your doctor is the best judge of when you need such a test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the HS-CRP test done only to find the risk of heart disease?

In most of the cases, yes, as the C-reactive protein is released by the liver as a reaction to inflammation being caused due to clogged up arteries. The doctor may also recommend an HS-CRP test to find out if the anti-inflammatory medicines that you are taking are having a positive effect or not.

What is the difference between the HS-CRP test and the standard CRP test?

Whereas the standard CRP test is done to find different ailments in your body that may be causing an inflammation the HS-CRP test is done to see if you run the risk of heart disease or a stroke.

Do I need to fast before submitting my serum sample for the HS-CRP test?

There is no need to. What you have eaten just now, except if it is an anti-inflammatory medication, has no effect on your HS-CRP test results. In fact, since the results cannot be controlled, two tests are done with a gap of two weeks and then the results are averaged for an educated and informed analysis.

Does the HS-CRP test involve a complicated process?

It is a very simple process, actually. Our lab technician will visit you to draw the blood out of your arm vein. You will experience just a small prick. Once the serum sample is collected it is submitted to our lab. You get the results within two days. You don't even need to visit our lab. Everything is delivered right at your doorstep or in your email inbox (in the case of the PDF test result).

My doctor hasn't yet recommended an HS-CRP test; what are the indications that I should have it?

Preferably, you must get an HS-CRP test done at the recommendation of your doctor. Nonetheless, if you have a family history of heart disease then it is safe to have an HS-CRP test. Other than that, if there is an indication of high total cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure or uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure, it is a safe bet to have an HS-CRP test done. Also, if you smoke regularly, you don't exercise much and you consider yourself obese or overweight, you should get an HS-CRP test done.

Aside from the medication recommended by my doctor, what precautions should I take in case the HS-CRP test shows high C-reactive protein?

Follow a healthy lifestyle. Try to get your high cholesterol down. Keep your weight in check. Exercise regularly. Learn to manage your diabetes and high blood pressure. Don't consume alcohol in excess and reduce your tobacco consumption. Switch to a healthier, non-fatty diet.
