This test is conducted to diagnose iron deficiency in your body or if there is more than required iron in your blood.

The mineral iron is part of hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen from our lungs throughout our body. This oxygen is then stored in our muscles to use for different bodily functions. If there is iron deficiency it leads to anemia. There is less oxygen in our body.

On the converse side, too much iron can cause iron poisoning. Hence, in both the cases, you may be required to get an iron test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I refrain from eating or drinking before giving blood for iron test?

Yes, you may be advised to fast for at least 12 hours before submitting your blood sample for the iron test. You may also be told not to smoke before submitting the sample.

Do low levels of iron in blood happen only because of food choices?

Not always. But yes, a big part of iron content in your blood comes from the food that you take and if you're not taking that food (many vegetables, pulses and fruits) you may suffer from iron deficiency. Iron deficiency or iron access can also happen due to hormonal imbalance or any other ailment you may be suffering from. You may also have low iron levels during pregnancy.

What foods should I consume to avoid iron deficiency?

All green and leafy vegetables such as spinach, abundantly have iron in them. You can also consume whole grain items, cereals, raisins and molasses. Iron is also found in meat and egg. Your doctor may also advise iron supplements. You can also consult a nutritionist.

Do I need a doctor's prescription to get an iron test?

It is not required, but it certainly helps. No one casually gets an iron test done out of the blue. It is often suggested by a doctor. Hence, if you are getting an iron test done for yourself, you must probably have a doctor's prescription. It is a fairly safe procedure. No risk is involved. Just a blood sample is drawn from your arm.

Can I get an iron test done online?

Although these days there are some devices available that can perform a basic iron test (the way people test blood sugar these days at home) a comprehensive test can only be conducted in a lab. You can consult a physician online, but when it comes to drawing the blood serum sample you will either personally need to visit the lab, or a technician will have to visit you.
