Vitamin D is responsible for the absorption of calcium, magnesium and phosphate by your body. Consequently, it is responsible for healthy bones and teeth. It is a fat-soluble secosteroid. Since one of its major sources is sunlight, it is often referred as the "sunshine vitamin". There are two types of Vitamin D: Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3. It is Vitamin D3 that you naturally get from the sunlight.

You get Vitamin D2 from different food sources such as eggs, certain seafoods, butter, oily fish, and fish oil. Vitamin D Test is done to measure the level of 25(OH)D in your blood, which stands for 25 hydroxyvitamin D, which is formed with a combination of Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3. You need a Vitamin D test if you are showing symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency that may include pain in the joints, bone weakness or bone softness, bone malformation (especially among children) and easily caused fractures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many times should I get my Vitamin D test done?

If you have had problems with Vitamin D deficiency or with excess amounts of Vitamin D in your system, it is recommended that you get the test done at least four times every year.

Is it necessary that I fast before submitting my blood samples for the Vitamin D test?

Sometimes your Vitamin D test is clubbed with other tests (for example, blood sugar levels) and hence, your doctor may recommend that you submit your blood sample before and after eating something. Particularly for Vitamin D test, it is not necessary that you fast. In case you are taking some medication and if that medication can have a temporary effect on the levels of Vitamin D in your body, then you may need to consult your doctor regarding whether to abstain taking the medicine for a while or continue taking it.

Is sunlight the only source for Vitamin D?

There are multiple types of Vitamin D, but the Vitamin D that you get from the sun is called Vitamin D3. Vitamin D2 is sourced from your diet. You need a balance of both types of Vitamin D. If there is a problem, it is always better to consult a doctor whether it is safe for you to spend time under the sun or whether it is fine to consume certain dietary options. Some foods that can be good Vitamin D supplements include cod liver oil, egg yolk, seafood, mushrooms, fortified dairy products, and red meat.

Why is it important to get Vitamin D test?

Even if you're not suffering from the known symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency or an excess of Vitamin D, you should observe your lifestyle and then decide whether you should get yourself a Vitamin D test. Are you obese? Are you over 50? Do you mostly eat vegan diet? You don't spend much time under the sun? You are expecting a baby? Is there a constant pain originating from your bones? These are some convincing reasons why you should get a Vitamin D test done as early as possible.

Why do bones get weak if there is Vitamin D deficiency?

Vitamin D is responsible for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. The micronutrients calcium and phosphate are the two main components of hydroxyapatite, which keeps your bones strong. 99% and 80% of the calcium and phosphate in your body comes from your bones, respectively. Hence, when there is insufficient Vitamin D, these micronutrients are not produced, your bones are unable to repair themselves and they grow weaker.
